                    Course calendar with field trips

Location:  Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Sciences Conference Room (located off campus, click here for directions)

Objectives:  To gain an overview of the diverse aquatic ecosystems in Florida, and an understanding of the complexities of aquatic ecosystems and their ecology.  We will explore freshwater lakes, streams and springs, estuaries, and offshore oceanic ecosystems, thus encapsulating the full range of Florida’s aquatic systems.  Important themes through the course will revolve around:  nutrient effects on aquatic ecosystems, roles of habitats in structuring aquatic systems, and water use implications for aquatic ecosystems.  In each field trip we will identify prominent plants, fishes, and invertebrates that occur and discuss system ecology.  Lectures will provide the background for placing field observations into a broader context.  Required supplemental readings will illustrate key scientific research or ideas related to the ecology of aquatic organisms and their environments.
